Spring Cleaning: Clean Smarter, Not Harder

With Spring knocking on our door, here’s some great tips to start that spring cleaning starting with your grout.

Tiles, they are no trouble to clean but grout on the other hand no matter how sparkly those tiles are, grout continues to look old and tired. Here is a few ways looking as good as new.

Spring

Tip #1
Use Baking Soda: Start by making a thick paste consistency by mixing baking soda and water together. Grab an old toothbrush apply paste to the grout and gently scrub it clean.

Tip#2
Not a fan of the scrubbing? Have an old electric toothbrush or battery operated brush laying around. Use it as your very own tile grout cleaning machine.

Tip#3
Baking soda alone not getting the job done? Try adding some hydrogen peroxide to it instead of making your paste with water. The mildly abrasive properties of the baking soda helps to life dirt from the grout while the hydrogen peroxide acts as a non toxic bleach. Still not powerful enough? Try adding a little dish soap to your mixture our recommended ratio is 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon dish soap. After applying your mix let it sit on the grout for about 10 minutes, this will allow the mixture some time to loosen the dirt first, then gently scrub and wipe the surface clean with a warm damp cloth.

Tip#4
Vinegar – although we would typically recommend this for a natural household cleaner vinegar alone is proven to be too acidic for cleaning grout and can actually corrode the grout over time.

Tip#5
Boiling water is old of the oldest and simplest ways to clean grout. Pour the boiling water directly onto the grout and use a scrubbing brush to gently scrub the grout in a circular motion. Try doing this in small patches at a time, the heat will help release the grime and simply use a towel to dry any excess water.
